Nestled in the mountains just north of this popular city, The Pavana is a must-do for any wellness junkie looking for a health retreat in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This is not a foo-foo spa resort or simply a beautiful place to lay by the pool with a margarita. This is a place for true transformation and healing. You will have to put in some work in order to reap the benefits, but everything at The Pavana; the setting, the accommodations, the food and the service, is designed to support your healing process.
The Pavana: A Perfect Health Retreat In Chiang Mai, Thailand
From the moment I began researching The Pavana online I knew this place was special. It’s clear they take health and detox seriously. They have trained doctors on site to help each individual understand what to expect during a detox cleanse. There are expert meditation teachers and fitness gurus leading group classes, who are passionate about what they do.
And the food?! Think fruit and vegetable juices on demand, delicious Ayurvedic-inspired meals to balance your doshas, and a detox menu engineered with the latest nutrition research. This retreat promises to nourish your mind, body, and spirit.
From the Nimman area of the city, the drive is about 25 km, which took about 40 minutes by scooter. If you don’t want to ride a scooter, you can either rent a car or catch a Grab: Thailand’s version of Uber.
Checking In + Choosing Your Program
When you arrive at The Pavana, you feel welcomed and peaceful right away. During the check-in process you not only receive keys to your room and a map of the grounds, but you also decide on your program. The staff will help you choose how many days to cleanse, if you want to include a colema (coffee enema), whether you want to add any spa services, and let you know about the group meditation, yoga, and fitness classes available.
I only had three nights to spend at The Pavana, so my friend and I choose a 2-day cleanse with colemas. Once we dropped off our luggage in the room, we went to the wellness hut where we had a consultation with the nurse. She walked us through our cleanse program, which consisted of fruit and vegetable juices throughout the day, a psyllium husk drink at mid-morning, and a coffee enema once per day.
We also opted in for the group meditation and yoga class each day and added a 60-minute massage to our program.
The Coffee Enema
I had never done an enema before. So the nurse took me in a room to explain the procedure. It’s a bit intimidating at first, but all the equipment is provided to you so you can perform the procedure in your own bathroom. Even with a bit of a language barrier, the nurse did a fantastic job at explaining how to do it as well as the benefits. I highly recommend trying it out. I did two coffee enemas total, once a day on my 2-day cleanse. I felt amazing afterward.
As a certified health coach, I’ve done many cleanses in my time. I’ve done juice cleanses, whole food cleanses, you name it. One of the main differences between doing a cleanse at home and doing a cleanse as a health retreat is that you don’t have prepare the food yourself! This is huge. Things are so much easier and less stressful; you can truly relax and rejuvenate.
When it was time for our next juice or meal, we would simply go to the open-air restaurant, tell them our name, and they would prepare it for us. The juices were made to order so they were fresh and delicious. Then we would sit by the pool and have the drinks delivered to us. If that’s not heaven I don’t know what is.
For our last meal each day, we had a choice of one of the approved soups. I choose the veggie miso soup both nights. It’s so delicious and comforting. The perfect nourishment before a restful night of sleep.
If you’ve ever done a detox cleanse before, you know there are physical and emotional effects that come along with it. You might experience headaches, be moody, have digestive discomfort, or generally feel like crap at times. For this reason, I find a wellness retreat center, such as The Pavana, to be a highly effective environment for cleansing. Here, you can relax. Here, you are taken care of. Here, you can unwind and not worry about anything except allowing your body to restore balance.
In addition to the food and environment, The Pavana provides 5-star amenities to enhance your cleanse program.
- Group meditation and yoga classes are held in The Shala, a large hut structure up on a hill that overlooks the Mae Ann valley below.
- There is a full-service spa where we enjoyed an hour massage on the second day or our cleanse.
- You can even add on services like astrology readings and personal coaching sessions during your stay.
- A brand new labyrinth had just been built by the resident meditation instructor. My friend and I took turns journeying through it and learning what we needed to learn.
Again, The Pavana provides everything you need for mind, body, and spiritual healing.
I have such fond memories of this place and I didn’t even scratch the surface of what they have to offer. I highly recommend The Pavana for any amount of time if you want to experience true health and wellness. This is a place where you can disconnect from the hectic, modern world in order to reconnect to nature and yourself. Next time, I’ll be going back for an extended period of time!
